Mt. Tam Watershed Access

Project Status

In September 2024 -- after six years of meetings, community outreach, surveys, workshops, and consultant reports -- the MMWD board finally approved a "pilot program" to give class 1 e-bikes the same access as other bicycles.  This program, in combination with the single track pilot program, gave class 1 e-bikes official access to 90 miles of fire roads and six miles of trails.

Although termed a "pilot", the e-bike program did not actually change any usage.  E-bikes have  been present on MMWD fire roads for years, with no adverse impact on the environment.

Unfortunately, several hiker-friendly groups sued to stop the two programs, claiming that MMWD did not fully comply with California's environmental laws.  The Marin Superior Court temporarily put the programs on hold.

E-mountain bikes are still prevalent on the fire roads, just as they are on the adjoining Golden Gate Recreation Area roads and trails. The only difference: we are official in the GGNRA.

Next Steps

  1. Participate in updating of MMWD Road and Trails Management Plan to ensure fair treatment of e-bikes

  2. Monitor lawsuit to ensure best outcome
